NEW "LIVE!" 23 SONG ALBUM AVAILABLE ONLY ON BANDCAMP.COM!!! CLICK BELOW IMAGE TO PURCHASE
The Candy Jacket Jazz Band is comprised of some of the best swing practitioners in the United States. Since forming in 2016, they have successfully forged their own path through the modern day "vintage" jazz scene.
The group, led by composer/arranger/drummer - Josh Collazo, prides itself on performing original compositions in a style that is reminiscent of the famous jazz & swing artists of the 1930's & 1940's. Tight arrangements, clever hooks, and a heavy dose of swing allows the bands signature sound to shine brightly through. No carbon copies here though - just solid playing filled with musicality, skill, respect, and deep knowledge of jazz history to build upon.
Thanks to a loyal fan base, The Candy Jacket Jazz Band has had the pleasure of performing at many national events, such as Lindy Focus, The International Lindy Hop Championships, DCLX, and The Redwood Coast Music Festival. A few highlights include headlining at The Wiltern Theater (LA), Swingin' at the Savoy (SF), and The 2017 San Diego Jazz Festival.
With much success, The Candy Jacket Jazz Band recently released their sophomore album, Unstuck in Time. They also released an original holiday single, "Christmas Time in Los Angeles", which features the wonderful vocals of Dave Stuckey.

Anecdote #1 : Weekly stories about recording unstuck in time
Candy Jacket Jazz Band
Published on Dec 19, 2018 on YouTube
Today we begin a weekly series of short anecdotes about the making of our new album, Unstuck in Time! To kick things off, I think it would be fitting to begin with the title track.
Once everything has been recorded and instruments have put back in their cases, you are left with a figurative mountain of music to wade through. A new chapter begins with having to hypercritically listen to every performance over and over, until you know each nook and cranny of each take. I then begin “grading” each take. Not only as a whole, but each section. Sometimes even whittling down to the best measure of a particular phrase. It can be daunting but it is definitely worth it, in my opinion.
For this particular song, we recorded 4 takes - the 4th being the one that is used on the album. In my experience, you are usually gonna get the best performances out of the musicians on the 1st, 3rd, or last take.
When I began composing the song weeks prior to the session, I asked myself, “If I had the opportunity to write a song for Johnny Hodges, what would it sound like?”. Thus, the arrangement naturally rests on the shoulders of Nate Ketner and his alto saxophone. While listening back to all of the takes, I could hear Nate gradually get inside the arrangement and begin making it his own. I chose the fourth take, not only because of his genius solo, but also because of the way he weaves his own melodic lines in and out of the ensemble figures. It is worth mentioning for the non-musicians that his first solo chorus breaks down to only him and myself (brushes on drums). Masterfully, he is able to make it sound like a full rhythm section is backing him up.
It is also worth noting the incredibly melodic piano solo by Chris Dawson. Chris is an absolute powerhouse and consistently elevates the band with his musicianship. (More on Chris in later anecdotes)
Now about the silly video above…
This happened to be my last time listening to the song before I finally sent it off to Seth Ford-Young for mixing. After a two days of listening to the same song over and over, making sure any little edits are unnoticeable, you begin to lose it a little. Their is no deep meaning behind the Darth Vader mask. I just happen to have a 6 year old son that left it on top of my speakers. I hope this gives you all a slightly deeper glimpse into the song, “Unstuck in Time”. I look forward to sharing more stories in the coming weeks. Follow us on Youtube!
